First I very much appreciate your support, and (hopefully) will be able to appreciate support from other players in the future!
If I had done this project as a kick starter then I would have tried to bribe you with goods to get your ducats early. Instead, I paid for the art and did the work, with fine help from Beau and my wife, and am charging a fair price for it. I originally did not want to do an ebook, BUT I had some private emails asking as it was not feasible to get a paper one.
I was only going to charge $1 less. The effort, art and work are all the same, and you save having no shipping. Instead, knowing some who already purchased the book, might want the ebook too...I charged 25% less: $14.99. In January the price goes up on both so early adopters are being rewarded now.
At 20% off (using the NOVBOOKS12 COUPON) the book is $16+S/H. I am sure in December there will be another coupon, and that will probably make the ebook 20% off too. so for under $30, less than the price of most RPG's, you could have 2 copies.
This represents 11 months of work in my "free time" and the help of artists and editors. I hope you find it worth your hard earned dollars, and it may, or may not, be worth purchasing a second copy, but I do my best to make it worth the time and effort of us both.
Did a read-through of the book last night and I'm really so pleased and impressed. This is very close to what I'd wished "Dragons of Underearth" had been so many years ago.
When you get a chance, and if you have interest, I'd love for you to do a blog entry talking about your design decisions regarding Endurance. I know the addition of an additional stat for health/fatigue has long been a popular house rule, and I really like your approach (EN for PCs, but not for Terrors).
I haven't done a side by side comparison of monster stats between HOW and TFT/DOU/LAW, but I'm curious to see if you had to up the ST in some cases to offset this change to PCs. Or if it simply makes the game less deadly. What is the best way to balance "equivalent" PCs against NPCs so that EN isn't a massive advantage? Things like that, I really like to know your thoughts.
Just to be clear, I don't think I've yet found anything wrong in the book. So far everything appears to work "out of the box" as-is. My question about EN really comes from breaking myself out of the TFT mindset. As it happens, I see that Christopher did actually write up some of his thoughts on EN back in April (http://heroworlds.blogspot.com/2012/04/thoughts-on-game-play.html), which is where I saw mention of the 4/DX. It's possible that he plans to add more optional/advanced tweaks like that in Blades & Black Magic. But as far as I can tell, everything works fine as written.
I purchased the physical copy on Monday with a rush order... What are the possibilities for a 2-for-the-price-of-one for us early buyers?
ReplyDeleteI can't wait to get my hands on this... Been waiting anxiously awaiting HOW for sooooo long...
Thank you for your hard work,
Todd
AKA - Wothbora
Oops, "2-for-the-price-of-one" meaning an electronic copy...
ReplyDeleteI humbly second the Todd's sentiments above :-)

FYI, that DELIRITAS code (30% off) *still* works tonight, Weds 11/28. As far as I can tell, it works even if you used it earlier in the week.
ReplyDeleteAnd thank you for not using that Adobe Digital Editions format again for HOW. The ADE format is useless on my Kindle!
Both the book and the PDF look great. Looking forward to hitting both HOW and some unplayed DCG releases over the holiday season!
Hey RSJ! Cool that code makes the ebook even cheaper! I really hope you like HOW and DCG does make lots of great adventures!
ReplyDeleteIf any new HOW players want an adventure right away to play? Check out DCG they have lots of them ready to play!
I like the cover of the digie edition! It's an invitation to a "Death Test". Hopefully my print copy comes before the weekend, but we shall see...

Also, did the "Once you are out of EN, your attacks are made at 4/DX" rule get cut? I thought that was a great way to delineate between ST and EN.
ReplyDeleteI just bought the download and it looks great... Actually, helping you out with the cost was definitely worth it...
ReplyDeleteThanks again for such a great product!!!
Thank you kindly sir! I truly appreciate your support!
DeleteI see a 'designer's notes' article right around the corner.

ReplyDeleteIndeed RSJ, I tried to keep the core rules basic (while introducing the idea of options) and will add more in B&BM.
