The Magus Carta, strike that, Magi Carta

The Magus Carta Magi Carta will be the title for the new spell and magic book for Heroes & Other Worlds.  My wife is at work on a new cover and I am happy to say the spreadsheet of spells is also complete.  Yes indeed IQ8 through IQ18, all are complete.

Now its a matter of working it into a word document, fleshing out the spell descriptions and adding the other nifty bits.  This is one mountain climb finished. Although the view is nice, I still see a few more peaks ahead yet to climb.

  1. Very excited about this! I just picked up H&OW and it is as if it was tailor made to what I was wanting (and couldn't find these past 2 years or so).

    1. Thanks ACM for giving the game a try and I am happy to hear you enjoy it! It's definitely a labor of love and was created based on my own wishes to find a game like it as well. I can recommend Dark City Games adventures to you as well if you are looking for an adventure or ten to play!

Of note, currently I am going to estimate the Magus Carta will be near 200 pages when complete, and it will be a lightly illustrated book and will not include the spells found in the HOW rules book. Stay tuned true believers!

  2. Like AngryCoffeeMan, I too just acquired HOW and am liking what I'm seeing--especially since I missed out on The Fantasy Trip the first time round. Looking forward to the new material you're cooking up!

    1. Thanks very much for your support and for giving the game a go Rob! While HOW isn't a perfect clone of TFT, it is of the same family tree. Further projects such as:

Magus Carta will add a boatload of spells and new magic bits.

Blades & Black Magic will add more character options, more combat options, more creatures, magic, and hexplore/wilderness rules.

An authorized adaption of Lee Reynoldson's Redwald will add a Saxon/dark ages fantasy/historical setting to adventure in.

Grim Venture will be my ode to the death test adventures of old.

      ...and the Cauldron Quarterly...

So many plans and I very much appreciate your support and patience as I undertake them.

    2. You're very welcome, sir. I will be taking the solo adventure in the main book out for a test drive and then reporting on the experience via my Vargold blog.

  3. you did everything i wanted to do with DarkCityGames' rules except for how you handled attribute buffing. 98 out of 100 ain't bad! :)

can you give a ballpark figure on how many spells are in Magus Carta? btw, my mouth/brain can't say that right. it keeps saying Magna Carta. how bout Magi Carta? :)

    1. If we wanted to get pedantic, the correct Latin would either be "Magi Carta" ("Paper of the Mages") or "Magica Carta" ("Magical Paper"). But do we want to get pedantic? :)

    2. the suggestion was made more in jest than sincerity. thanks for the latin lesson though, Oh Pendantc One :) i'm just having a hard time training my brain/mouth to say Magus Carta instead of Magna Carta.

    3. P.S. for some reason, it is extremely easier for me to say Magi Carta than it is to say Magus Carta. i have never taken latin, so i really do appreciate the latin lesson.

    4. I am OKAY with pedantic...in this case! :) Magi Carta it is!

    5. Hi Adam, thanks for taking time to post your thoughts and I am especially thankful for your support of Heroes & Other Worlds! Currently its about 500 spells. I know not including Attribute increases would be an "issue" with experienced players. I am one myself and a lot of thought and personal experience went into the change so it wasn't done off the cuff. That being said, I hope you will change it to suit your needs! Hooray for house rules! :)

    6. that is a lot of spells! i anxiously await Magi Carta with money in hand! btw, most translators/dictionaries say carta=charter as in the case of the Magna Carta or Great Charter from history. whichever translation one subscribes to, i think you've picked a great name.

please, you don't have keep justifying why you left out attribute increases. i get it. i understand. it is not issue. on everything else in the HOW core, we seem to think alike. i'm just glad there is someone else out there that thinks like me...at least some of the time! :)
