What is Heroes & Other Worlds?

Heroes & Other Worlds is a game of adventure inspired by Metagaming's classic Melee/Wizard/TFT system combined with inspiration from the Moldvay edited basic game. The rules are easy to learn and use standard six sided dice. The system is simple, sensible and flexible in the spirit of classic role playing games from the early 80's. Become a Hero, Other Worlds await!

  1. Say, two questions have popped up in various discussions I've been having about HoW and BBM lately.

First, in Magi Carta, you have a "Reduce Person" spell, which actually mentions an "Enlarge Person" spell in it's spell description, but the actual spell for "Enlarge Person" is completely missing (or at least we can't seem to find it). Do you have the data for such a spell? (I'm assuming it was an oversight, but if you specifically chose not to include it, we'd love to hear your rationale for that too).

Second, a more generic question about Blades -- do you have any idea when the PDF version might be available over on LuLu?

Much appreciate any info or insight you can share with us on these two items!

    1. Hi Jeff!

Easy one first, If I release as is, PDF should be this weekend. If hyper documents links are wanted then its going to have to wait/ I am so busy with my real job that just trying to find time to get Frostcrawl done is a challenge.

AS to Enlarge person--it is an editing mistake with its inclusion in the Reduce person spell. Why?

      1) I did not want the wizard spells to be the solve all for challenges
      2) I did not what the heroic fantasy of HOW to be super charged with a super big hero--why fear giants or dragons when with a quick wizard spell I can be just as big!
      3) By keeping reduce person it allows for some creative "problem solving" by the party--maybe fighting isn't always the answer!

There is a Growth Potion available in Terrors & Treasures so the effect is in game--but only as a potion! So that keeps t he magic magical IMHO and allows for the same in game effect but in a much more limited and special usage manner.

  2. Thanks, C.R.! Much appreciated -- I know you've got at least one PDF sale coming as soon as it's up (and that's assuming I can't scrape together enough to order it right away; otherwise, you've got two!). And your answer on the spell is perfect. Thanks again!

    1. Hi Marek--there isn't one! The way I play is I find maps and work them into my game. I like the flexibility and creativity that affords me as a referee to make it unique.

One of the challenges of playing in a set map world is 1) Players have access immediately 2) Your own explorations and adventures may be hemmed in/limited by a pre-set map.

So with BLADES I outlined some kingdoms as starting points and idea generators as well as including a rough them environment for how to play them (mountains/winter or coastal/islands--etc.) This way you can use your own maps and explore/make the world you want!

I can certainly look at cobbling together one digitally from the paper scraps and versions I have in my folders, but that will take a back seat to getting Frostcrawl, Black Magic and Cauldron 2 out.

I truly due publish stuff in the manner of how I play but I understand YMMV.

  4. Not bad approach. So I fill the emptinesses on my own.
